Top-Grain Leather
Same top layer, but sanded to remove surface blemishes. Consistent appearance, excellent durability. Slightly less character than full-grain but still a quality material.
"Genuine" Leather
Made from inner hide layers, the scraps left after full-grain and top-grain are cut away. Real leather technically, but processed heavily and significantly less durable. Often cracks within 1 to 3 years of regular use.
Bonded Leather
Leather dust and scraps mixed with polyurethane and pressed into sheets. Looks like leather at first. Delaminates and peels within months. The particle board of the leather world, cheap because it should be.
PU / PVC Synthetic
Entirely man-made. Plastic-based material designed to look like leather. No natural flexibility, no breathability, cracks at fold points. The most common material on budget championship belt straps.

The Pinch Test
Pinch a small section of the strap between your fingers and create a gentle fold. Genuine leather forms visible fine wrinkles and a slight colour shift at the crease, the fibres are moving. Synthetic leather either holds its shape rigidly with no crease, or shows a faint surface pattern that is completely uniform. PVC is noticeably stiffer and may resist folding entirely.
The Smell Test
Genuine leather has a distinctive organic, earthy smell, the result of the tanning process and natural hide. It is not unpleasant and fades over time. Synthetic materials smell of plastic or chemicals on first unboxing. PVC in particular has a sharp chemical smell that takes weeks to fully dissipate. If a new belt smells like a shower curtain or a new plastic bag, the strap is synthetic.
The Edge Test
Look at the cut edges of the strap, where it ends at the buckle area or along the sides before the edge-bevel. Genuine leather shows a slightly fibrous, layered edge, you can see the hide structure. - Wipe down after handling. A soft, dry cloth removes fingerprints and surface dust. Do this after wearing or handling the belt for photos. Do not use paper towels, they can abrade the surface over time.
- Condition every 6 months. Apply a small amount of quality leather conditioner, neutral tone, not wax-based, to the strap with a soft cloth. Work it in with circular motions and let it absorb for an hour before buffing off the excess. This keeps the leather supple and prevents the surface from drying out and cracking at fold points.

Synthetic straps require almost no maintenance, and that is genuinely their only practical advantage. Wipe with a damp cloth, done. But no amount of maintenance extends a synthetic strap's cracking lifespan. The failure is in the material structure, not the surface treatment.
